Moving to Ramsgate: Area Guide
PART 2: WESTCLIFF & ST. LAWRENCE
Ramsgate is a great residential retreat for families, first time buyers and older couples looking for respite from busy central London.
The quaint streets of this neighbourhood have an array of different types of homes. Ramsgate is split into little burrows, Dumpton, Eastcliff, Westcliff, St. Lawrence, Newington, Nethercourt and Northwood.
Ramsgate has the unique benefit of have the only Royal Harbour in the whole of the UK and benefits from a great sea front full of bars, restaurants, cafés and take aways. Throughout the year there are many things going on with live music, fairs and lights on the boats during Christmas time. The high street sits in the centre of all of Ramsgate and meets at a crossroads in the middle. Shops, pubs, cafés restaurants and high street shops are all around this area.
The Ramsgate train station is situated within 0.5 miles from the high street and allows amazing transport into London which can be as quick as 1 hour and 13 minutes into London St Pancras.
Each little burrow has an array of several types of properties, here are what you tend to get in each area and a brief demographic.
WESTCLIFF:
Westcliff is situated between Cliffsend and the East Cliff of Ramsgate with its glorious sandy beach. The West cliff have two parts, one the main Westcliff area and the other Pegwell. Pegwell has amazing walks and views over the cliff tops. The houses in this area range from the 1700’s all the way to modern new builds. The styles of property also range from terrace house, semi-detached and detached all the way through to bungalows and apartments. Pegwell however is a mixture of small Victorian properties to buildings aging around 1970’s. There are older properties dotted around and newer builds which may suit you more.
Schools in this area include Chilton school and Christchurch Junior School both of which are highly regarded with both performing well in their Ofsted reports. Also, you have Chatham and Clarendon Grammar School in this part of Ramsgate.
The train station allows easy access to Margate, surrounding areas and fast links to London. Also, the new station in Cliffsend with even faster links to London will be one stop away.
Westcliff area has an array of shops, being so close to the High Street and Queen Street including Waitrose and numerous smaller shops dotted around. Pegwell, has two pubs, the Stanley Grey and Pegwell Bay with gorgeous views over the cliff across the Sea. Along the cliff tops is the Ramsgate boating pool.
The popular beach of Pegwell Bay, is used for walking dogs but spans all the way round to the edge of Cliffsend, also giving access to Pegwell nature reserve. The other way you can walk to Ramsgate harbour.
ST LAWRENCE:
St Lawrence is just along the road from the Westcliff and Pegwell, is where the Ramsgate train station is located. The main style of homes around this area ranges from period homes to 1930’s and 1970’s homes. The bulk of these properties are period homes and are still used today as full houses and are mainly smaller first-time buyer houses in the centre with larger family homes on the out skirts. There are number of newer build properties dotted around but not any large developments.
There are a few schools in this area however, being in the centre allows you to be in the catchment for numerous different schools. The main school in St Lawrence is Ellington which again has a good Ofsted score.
St Lawrence is closest to the train station but still allows easy access in and out of Ramsgate and to all surrounding areas. Around here you have an array of shops, pubs and restaurants along with a Tesco’s, takeaways and Ramsgate football ground.
The popular beach of the Ramsgate sands and Pegwell are all within walking distance to St Lawrence.
